Ponte de Lima in Portugal

Ponte de Lima in Portugal is a gorgeous town in the north of the country. Its location beside the wide, scenic River Lima has a wonderful mountain backdrop and open feel.

Before parking up, we going to make use of the motorhome waste and dump area which is just outside of town. Portugal is actually really good for touring, because it’s pretty motorhome-friendly with both service and parking areas.

After re-filling the water and emptying the waste, we’re off to find a parking spot in town. Finding a place in a large parking area is easy enough, and after a quick bite to eat, we’re off exploring on foot.

It turns out that Ponte de Lima is a really nice little town. Not only does it have an historic old centre with pleasant cobble shopping streets but a fabulous bridge too.

This is actually Portugal’s oldest charter town, so naturally it’s a place which attracts visitors. We’re here in early May and although there’s a few tourists walking about, it’s otherwise relatively quiet.

The Medieval bridge – Ponte de Lima in Portugal

The medieval stone bridge dominates the town and has Roman foundations beneath. Ponte de Lima is also on a long-distance walking route. It’s here where hikers pass through en-route to Santiago de Compostela.

Walking the bridge is just beautiful, and the views are just as splendid. Once on the bridge, we’re able to stop and admire the scenery, as well as watch kayaks gliding through the water in a graceful manner.

The river is crystal clear with large fish swimming and bright green reeds drifting in the currents. The sound of frogs croaking can be heard coming from the shallows, a sign of spring and the glory of a full summer ahead.

At the end of the bridge we arrive at a quaint small chapel, which is open for those wanting to admire the interior.

Refreshments in the sunshine

After walking the riverside paths and admiring the old town, it’s time to take a break. Choosing a small cafe offering milkshakes and ice cream, we take our pick and sit outside in a small square.

It’s a lovely time of year, the sun is warm and the sky blue, making the most of the fresh air and enjoying refreshments in the sunshine.

Ponte de Lima has been a really pleasant place to visit, in fact, it’s our final destination on this tour of Portugal. Once we’re back in the campervan, we choose to continue north, but this time we’ll be re-entering Spain.

Apparently, motorhomes can park overnight in the parking area, but we must venture onwards. We’re pleased to have spent some time here and may just return again one day in the future.
