Bom Jesus Do Monte

Bom Jesus Do Monte

Bom Jesus Do Monte

It’s early May on this campervan tour of Portugal and we’re about to visit one of the most impressive sights so far. Heading to the city of Braga, we’re here to see the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus Do Monte and we can’t wait.

We are also hoping to see the city of Braga itself, but give up on this after failing to find a place to park.

However, the out of town setting of Bom Jesus Do Monte proves much easier for parking. Here, we come to a large, free parking area where motorhomes are able to park overnight. There aren’t any services, but that doesn’t matter as the tanks are full of fresh and the waste empty.

Hill setting and the five senses

Developed over a period of 600 years, this UNESCO site covers a 26 ha area and comprises an alternative access by means of a 19th century funicular railway.

The incredible structure dominates its hill setting and consists of a series of tiered steps with 17 landing areas, incorporating water features depicting the five senses throughout.

At the top of the steps is a wonderful church, lake and gardens, providing an impressive setting and fine views.

Setting out from the parking area, we reach a footpath and steps leading up to the main feature. Turning a corner we come to an open area and the mighty sight of the stone steps.

The structure is simply magnificent, such an unusual display before our eyes, where water trickles, baroque detailing intrigues and granite fountains provide restful contemplation.

Time to walk the steps – Bom Jesus Do Monte

Venturing up the stone steps onto the labyrinth of detail and listening, looking, feeling our way upwards. All part of course, of this sensory experience, enlightening with each step and feeling part of this monument like structure. Amongst stone carvings of the staircases are statues, each representing virtues of hope, glory, peace, kindness and confidence included.

We linger on each of the landing areas, as this monument has so much to see, looking in detail at the design and marvelling at the views back toward Braga takes time.

Each landing area brings us closer to the wonderful church at the top and emerging onto an open terrace brings another fabulous moment to admire the views.

Floral displays and blooms of colour form part of the gardens, whilst ponds and gentle waterfalls flow in the solitude.

The church and gardens

The weather today is perfect for visiting the Bom Jesus Do Monte, with the sun shining and everything looking wonderful.

Now we’re heading inside the church though, which is busy with groups from tours and worshippers too. Inside is a beautiful, calming place to admire before heading back outside to explore the gardens.

The water theme continues with a beautiful pond featuring a waterfall which we walk behind. Wonderful mosses provide greenery and capture the gentle flow of water into the shallow pool.

Across from the church is the funicular railway, which has its access point for those choosing the easier route up.

The gardens give way to a boating lake. Here rowing boats can be hired for a gentle ride on the water. This place is so serene, it’s perfectly dreamy.

There are trails going through mature woodland, terraces to admire more views, seating areas and lawns.

We really enjoy our visit here and leaving proves a little unappealing. However, all good things must come to an end, so must this day visiting this Sanctuary of Bom Jesus Do Monte.

Heading back down the steps of the monument leads us the way we came, merging back to the parking area and the campervan.

What a wonderful place this has been and a highlight on this tour of Portugal.
