Senj motorhome parking

Bakarac to Senj Coastal Croatia

It’s May 2023 and we’re driving the coastal route from Volosko then Bakarac to Senj in a beautiful coastal area of Croatia.

Not only is the route mostly breathtaking, but the empty landscapes around us, remind me of just how unpopulated Croatia is. Views of islands rise from the Adriatic dominating much of the coast, as we wind our way around its headlands.

This area is the Kvarner region of Croatia and it feels quite different to the nearby Istrian coast. Istria has a strong Venetian feel, thanks to it’s location just across the sea from Venice. Along with unbelievably beautiful towns, intimate coves and lush greenery amongst an arid exterior.

Unfortunately the weather in May hasn’t been quite as we’d hoped. Not only has the rain been relentless but it’s also a bit chilly.

A break in the cloud brings hope of seeing some long awaited sunshine. Then, as we approach the small coastal town of Senj, the sun finally makes an appearance.

Doesn’t everything always look so much better in the sun?

It’s just as well, because we’re about to set eyes upon the most tempting motorhome stopover possible. The allure of the blue sky, crystal turquoise sea and parking areas beside the water is just too great to resist.

We’re a bit too slow to make the sharp turn into the entrance though, so end up driving passed. After heading up out of the town, we’re trying to find a place to turn around. It looks like a newly finished road layout and there’s a good fuel station, so we take the opportunity to stop and fill up.

Turning into the entrance to Autokamp Skver, a lady walks over to the cab to greet us. She explains the set up. On the sea side are pitches with direct access to the waterfront, but there’s only one pitch available.

Behind these pitches, set against a high wall below the main road are the alternative, slightly less expensive pitches.

She meets us at the grassy pitch and helps us manoeuvre into place. The cost is €22 per night, which includes hot, modern showers, toilets and a washing up area.

The best bit though is the location and with the late Spring warmth being felt, we’re ready to sit out with a strong cuppa. Wow! this view is awesome.

Not only is the outlook beautiful but the sea looks so inviting. Today it’s a little cool to take a dip, but just imagine being here in the heat of Summer.

In front of the Autokamp is a public promenade. Nothing terribly big, it’s actually more of a path than a prom.

After sitting out enjoying the surroundings, we make a break and head into Senj town.

It’s only a short walk, perhaps 10 minutes at the most, but we’re slow, thanks to the frequent stopping whilst we look into the water.

I love checking out the sea life, watching fish and anything else swim by – it’s intriguing.

The path widens as we approach the harbour. Here benches provide a welcome break to just sit, watch and enjoy. There’s cafe’s and restaurants along the way, mostly busy with people enjoying the balmy skies.

Above the old town sits a castle, Fort Nehaj, built in the 16th Century and still dominating the hillside.

Although Senj is a small town, it does come with character, a few intimate tiny streets and plenty of atmosphere. It’s the kind of place you may want to stay a few days. I’m guessing Autokamp Skver must be full to the brim during Summer, given its idyllic location and ease of access to town.

The combination is perfect for us motorhome travellers.

Now it’s time to retreat back to our dreamy campervan park up, take a shower and relax.

Before I go, it’s worth noting that Senj is gateway to Plitvice Lakes. So this Autokamp also makes a perfect stop before heading inland to Croatia’s most famous attraction.

On that note, this is exactly where we’ll be venturing off to next, driving the 90km inland route to Plitvice.

Join us then, for a truly magical day exploring this fascinating highlight, a must see visit for any traveller to Croatia and quite a sight to say the least.
