Gordes hilltop village

We leave the turquoise waters of Fontaine de Vaucluse following a tourist route to Gordes hilltop village. The wonderful landscapes of Provence beckon, bringing us to lavender fields, olive groves and deep forests.

The rocky backdrop of the Vaucluse mountains surround us, a breathtaking mix of immaculate villages and dramatic scenery.

Everywhere is neat, tidy and well maintained, making us feel relaxed just being in such a beautiful area. Buildings of pale stone scatter the landscapes whilst remote walks on marked dirt tracks look enticing.

Gordes is such a gorgeous place, resembling a hilltop village in Tuscany. It’s position, perched on a rocky hilltop in otherwise remote scenery is stunning.

Best of all, it still caters for motorhomes, offering a motorhome Aire just outside the centre costing €15 for 24 hours. There’s also a dump area and despite it seeming a bit pricey initially, we decide to stop to make exploring Gordes a little easier.

The mixed parking area is really busy and unfortunately the spaces are a little sloping. Never mind, we can manage for one night!

It’s only a 5 minute walk to the centre and we’re soon out on foot taking a look around. We’re here in mid October, but the weather is mild and the sun is shining. In the heart of this ancient village are cobbled alleyways linking narrow passages throughout the centre.

The Romance once occupied Gordes but its origins date back to Neolithic times. Troglodyte caves can be found in the rock and the remains of its colourful past are evident throughout.

In the heart of Gordes is a charismatic more modern element in the form of a luxury hotel. The 5* pampering a the Airelles Gordes looks like something from a movie scene.

Immaculately dressed footmen in beige knickerbockers, waistcoat and tights serve guests at the hotel lobby whilst pristine Cypress trees reach towards the Autumn sky.

We spot the pool areas where sun loungers have those deep cushions that you know will cost an arm and a leg. Everything here looks ultra expensive but divine.

After following a marked walking trail through the village and pondering at the views across the surrounding areas, it’s time for a break.

Later we return by night and it’s just as gorgeous. Fairy lights, cocktails and Americans in designer clothing make Gordes hilltop town a cut above the rest.

Yes, it may have the 11th century fortress position and artistic influences of the 1950’s, but Gordes is also a luxury hideaway kind of place.

Ultimately, there’s an earthy, magical mix that’s hard to resist and one that makes Gordes stand out from the rest. It’s quite simply beautiful.
